If the expressionistic Tourneur had crafted this Jane Eyre with these two leads, it would have been an adaptation for the ages. When he gets quiet, his charged stillness feels magnetic. Meanwhile, Welles tears into scenes with restless vitriolic fire. Fontaine, a wonderfully expressive actress, seems forever locked in close-up compositions as Bernard Herrmann’s orchestral score pummels the viewer with the force of her yearning. Together, Fontaine and Welles transform the beautiful chiaroscuro-lit sets into a sultry playground. That is a hell of a lot of adaptations for one novel. And there have been ten television adaptations of the novel. This potentially intense Victorian Gothic scenario feels too indebted to the literary source material (often cutting to highlighted text from the novel accompanied by voice-over narration), but when the stars appear on-screen together they are able to generate some heat. 'JANE EYRE' (1996) Review According to the Wikipedia website, there have been sixteen film adaptations of Charlotte Bront's 1847 novel, 'Jane Eyre'. Their brimming attraction toward one another is hindered by class barriers as well as the unfortunate fact that he’s married to a crazy woman locked in the attic. Former orphan turned governess Jane Eyre (Joan Fontaine) finds employment on the estate of the mysterious, frequently volatile Mr. Jane and Rochester are two troubled souls who recognise the passion in each other and are finally rewarded for their trials and tribulations. The enduring WWII-era cinematic adaptation of Jane Eyre is Jacques Tourneur’s hypnotic B picture I Walked with a Zombie, which, lurid title aside, captures the melancholy tone of Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel, but the Fox version is a well-constructed piece of studio work, with vivid black-and-white cinematography under matte painting skies that creates a turbulent, oppressive mood. The story is a powerful one and the characters are strong and credible. I studied it at school and I've seen the earlier film but not this one. This is one of my favourite books and is definitely worth reading.

One of those Thursdays I got to watch that version of the film.Įmbarrassingly, I have to admit to have never read the novel.Īnn Carr from SW England on September 11, 2020: When I lived in Beijing I used to go to a bar where on Thursday nights they would show Western movies some with sub-titles and some dubbed into Chinese. The copy of this film sort of became a cult classic and a lot of Chinese women identified with it.

Your review has encouraged me to watch this version Louise and I'm sure it will be enjoyable. I fell in love with this book at school and have watched an earlier film adaptation. Dame Judy Dench, who plays Mrs Fairfax, plays an excellent part, as you would expect. Although Mr Rochester seems quite a bit older than young Jane in this version, I think the connection between them is real. And I think with the difficult life that Jane has had, I really think she found someone she emotionally connected with. In a sense, Jane’s environment is sexuality - which surrounds her, misunderstood and unacknowledged.
JANE EYRE MOVIE REVIEW HOW TO
I sincerely believe he did had feelings towards her, only I don't think he knew how to deal with other aspects of his life, like Blanche and Bertha. Jane Eyres world must seem an ominous and forbidding place, charged with implied sexuality. She had such a difficult childhood growing up, only to be treated like this by Edward, although not intentionally. Only when Jane finds out about these secrets, you can see it hurts her. He's a likeable man, but also has secrets and, I believe, demons in his life that he keeps well hidden. I found that the actors that played Jane and Edward had a good connection and portrayed their characters well.Īlthough Edward Rochester isn't in the film as much as what Jane Eyre is, he comes as a strong and dark character. In the tradition of romance novels, the characters seem slightly contrived and the plot tends toward the melodramatic. Though plain by any standard, Jane has an inner dignity, and she ultimately triumphs in love and life. I found the story quite Gothic, set in this big stately home. Franco Zeffirelli, who brought us JESUS OF NAZERETH, now brings us Charlotte Bronte's famous romance, JANE EYRE. So I can't compare the film to the book, or even to other adaptations. I really should read the book, but I haven't.
